SUBURBAN NIEUWSBRIEF WEEK 27Bij deze de Nieuwsbrief van Suburban, week 27 alweer (net over de helft van 2009). Deze week hebben we de volgende korte berichten voor u in petto:The Gaslight Anthem en Bruce Springsteen in dubbel-duet Dat The Gaslight Anthem (TGA) en Bruce Springsteen goede vrienden zijn geworden is niet zo verwonderlijk. Beide bands komen immers uit New Jersey en TGA klinkt als het punkrockbroertje van Springsteen, hetgeen de band eerder dit jaar al enkele malen een supportslot voor The Boss opleverde. Op het Glastonbury Festival dat afgelopen weekend plaats vond gingen de stadsgenoten echter een stapje verder. Tijdens de show van TGA kwam Bruce, gewapend met gitaar, het podium op om TGA's hitsingle The '59 Sound extra cachet te geven en later die avond droeg TGA-frontman Brian Fallon zijn steentje bij tijdens Bruce's No Surrender. The album consists of 12 amazing new songs (9 with vocals and 3 instrumentals) each 100% written by Brian, which is a first in his 30-year career. The legendary big band orchestrator, 87-year-old Frank Comstock, was brought in to do all of the horn arrangements which perfectly complement these guitar-driven tracks. The sound of the record is best described as vintage Brian Setzer Orchestra with a "film noir" vibe. Gitarist/zanger en drievoudig Grammy Award winnaar Brian Setzer komt op 15 juli met zijn Brian Setzer Orchestra naar Nederland. Setzer, tevens bekend als frontman van het rockabillytrio de Stray Cats, behaalt al jaren grote internationale successen met zijn rockende bigband. Op 15 juli staat dit unieke swingspektakel in de Heineken Music Hall. Kaartverkoop start aanstaande zaterdag 23 mei, 10.00u. Het Brian Setzer Orchestra speelt een mix van swing, rockabilly en jumpblues en kan door de combinatie van Setzers wereldberoemde gitaarwerk en het arsenaal aan koperblazers met recht de meest rockende bigband ter wereld worden genoemd. Ondanks grote populariteit in Europa is deze band hier slechts zelden live te zien. Concertzalen verkopen in de VS (en Japan) al jaren uit, fans mogen zich dan ook gelukkig prijzen dat deze legende met zijn veelgeprezen orkest afreist naar Amsterdam want naast één festivaloptreden in Finland is dit de enige Europese show! Kingfisher Sky wisselt van toetsenistIn 2007 bracht de Haagse band Kingfisher Sky van ex-Within Temptation-drummer Ivar de Graaf en zangeres Judith Rijnvel zijn veelbesproken debuut-CD Hallway Of Dreams uit, wat de band vrijwel direct een licentie-deal in Japan en Amerika opleverde. Inmiddels heeft de band al een flink aantal nieuwe nummers geschreven voor de tweede CD die naar verwachting eind 2009 of voorjaar 2010 gaat uitkomen. Intussen is er ook een interne wissel, waarover we de band zelf aan het woord laten:"Vanaf september 2009 zullen wij verder gaan met Rene Merkelbach (o.a. Racoon, Krezip, Within Temptation) op toetsen die Ivar nog kent uit zijn tijd met Within Temptation gedurende de opnames van Mother Earth. De komende support shows met Delain en Epica zal Rene er al bij zijn. We verheugen ons erop. Paul Simon DVD Paul Simon & Friends komt hoog in de DVD-chart binnen! In May 2007, an unprecedented group of musicians gathered together in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., to honor Paul Simon as the first recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Alison Krauss, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Miriam Makeba, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Marc Anthony, Art Garfunkel, Shawn Colvin and a host of others joined Paul onstage in a multicultural tribute to the music of a great American artist and a great American art form. Albuquerque, New Mexico. Oude, stoffige, Spaanssporige stad tussen de woestijn en de Rio Grande. Het leven sloft er voort, de lucht hangt er laag, de bars heten er saloons. Zie je het voor je? Bands als The Shins en Beirut komen er vandaan. En BrokeNCYDE. BrokeNCYDE breekt met alles wat je van een band uit Albuquerque verwacht, sterker nog: met alles wat je überhaupt van een band verwacht. Ze zien eruit als cowboys op de emotoer en maken muziek uit gelijke delen crunk, de gecomputeriseerde partyhiphop uit de zuidelijke staten, en screamo, het hardcore- antwoord op death metal. Nee, dan Rolo Tomassi, een zeer avontuurlijke band die opzeker voor verbazing gaat zorgen, onder andere op Lowlands, Pukkelpop, Dour en Metropolis. De grensverleggende mathcore sensatie uit Engeland gooide begin dit jaar al hoge ogen op Eurosonic Noorderslag (behoorde tot de dagfavorieten van o.a. OOR en de Volkskrant en werd door 3voor12 een live sensatie genoemd) en tekende met debuutalbum Hysterics voor dé mathplaat van het jaar. Zangeres Eva Spence wordt met haar schattige jurkjes, nietsontziende screams en heftige grunts op handen gedragen in de UK en werd door NME verkozen tot 47ste coolste persoon van het jaar.
